Abstract

•A new technique for sex estimation was investigated using the volume of the tooth root.•The first reference study for sex estimation using 3D odontometric data in Iranian populations.•Tooth root volumes are specially effective in the case of samples containing poorly preserved bones and highly worn teeth.•The proposed technique is a valid alternative for sex estimation with the added value that no manual handling of the teeth-is necessary.

Advances in technologies such as computed tomography (CT) scanning have allowed for further examination of dental sexual dimorphism in modern and archaeological populations.
