Abstract
Hereafter, genetically modified (GM) crops (biotech crops) are cultivated each year by more than 18 million farmers in 28 countries. Concerning food safety, European rules are the most constraining, and despite several million euros spent and several thousand scientific papers demonstrating safety, tests required for risk assessment still induce costs that only major firms are able to pay. Recent precise and targeted methods allow introducing mutations in the plant genome without adding any foreign DNA. USA rules don't consider such plants as GM. If it would not be the same in Europe, biotech crops would stay inaccessible to small breeders and farmers, and we could only importâ¦
