Abstract
Physical activity is a cornerstone treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D) therapy, but its adherence remains poor. Neuromuscular-electrostimulation (NMES) is a physical treatment conventionally used to improve muscle volume and strength. Several studies had previously suggested that NMES could also have an interesting metabolic effect with improvement of various carbohydrate metabolism parameters. A pilot study recently confirmed this hypothesis, showing that daily bi-quadricipital NMES training significantly improved insulin sensitivity in patients with T2D. The mechanisms involved in this effect are not actually elucidated, and further studies are needed to assess its action on glycemic control.
