Abstract
Apollinaire Bouchardat (1806-1886) which was at the same time physician, pharmacist, chemist, and agronomist, is regarded as the founder of modern diabetology. His contributions recovered several fields of diabetology. Whereas its pathophysiology conceptions of diabetes were wrong, he was the first to promote self-monitoring of glycosuria as well as patient therapeutic education. He was also the first who recommended a specific diet and physical activity for the management of diabetes.
