Abstract
Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is a common situation in type 2 diabetes (T2D), particularly in women. Currently, screening is not recommended in usual clinical practice. The atherogenic process in SCH patients may lead to an increasing risk of cardiovascular event(s) (CVE) in SCH patients. The aim of this multicenter, case-control study, was to examine the relationship between SCH and CVE. SCH was associated to CVE in univariate and multivariate analysis, adjusting on age, duration of diabetes, HbA1c, traditional cardiovascular risk factors, and albuminuria (OR=2.39 [95% IC: 1.27-4.49]). Dyslipidemia and albuminuria were significantly more frequent in SCH T2D women with CVE (P=0.005, and P<10-3, respectively).
