Abstract
There is a particular form of protein-energy malnutrition in geriatric settings: extreme protein-energy malnutrition (EPEM). Some subjects come into nursing homes in a state of EPEM, that is to say, with a body mass index (BMI) under 18.5Â kg/m2. By its similarity with inappropriate refeeding syndrome (IRS), EPEM is not still identified as a risk-prone situation. Yet ordinary nutritional approaches can have deleterious consequences. This work aims to provide a bibliographic update reviewing the risk of inappropriate renutrition in case of EPEM in the elderly.
