Abstract
This article provides a brief description of the main neuropsychological models focusing on the understanding of the notion of subjective identity and its continuity across time. The main model is the “Self memory system” presented by Conway. It describes the way in which subjective identity is constructed and maintained throughout life. This entails complex interactions between semantic and episodic memory, alongside executive functions. As executive functions are the most impacted by the aging process, this system appears intrinsically vulnerable to the effects of aging. Hypotheses are proposed on the repercussions of cognitive decline and frailty on this system.
