Abstract
Antibiotic treatment depends on the causative organism and whether the infection is based on a native valve or prosthetic. The most common microorganisms are S. aureus, coagulase negative staphylococci, streptococci (especially S. bovis and other oral streptococci), enterococci, and to a lesser extent Gram negative bacilli (in particular the HACEK group) and fungi. In many cases patients with IE require surgery to resolve the infection. The indication of antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent IE has been reduced in recent years to a small group of high-risk patients.
