Abstract
Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is a tool with proven effectiveness to improve clinical outcomes for patients, minimizing toxicity and maximizing the effectiveness of treatments. Besides their use in those drugs with narrow therapeutic profile or dose-related adverse effects, TDM might help to obtain treatment individualization. Recognizing changes in both step of patient's pharmacokinetics (ADME: absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion) and individual pharmacokinetic parameter (volume of distribution, clearance, half-life, area under the curve, etc.) could be possible to interpret the plasma concentrations measured to achieve an expected therapeutic response with a specific dose. This article reviews some necessary aspects to consider before to use the MTF in our hospitals.
