Abstract
The United States Pharmacopeial Convention has revised the qualitative identification tests for the presence of acetate and ammonium in the US Pharmacopeia–National Formulary. This article outlines the rationale behind and the studies that support revision from olfactory assessments to color-based procedures to confirm the presence of acetate and ammonium ions in select materials. Neither the prior nor current approaches requires instrumentation.
