Abstract

The techniques for air sampling currently in existence cover a wide range of compounds and sampling approaches. Sampling for gases, vapors, aerosols and reactive compounds requires specialized methods to efficiently collect the samples and preserve them prior to analysis. These methods include the use of unique sorbents, filters, reagents, and sampler designs. Depending on the requirements of the data produced from air sampling and analyses, the sampling and analytical methods used may need to meet certain accuracy, precision and bias requirements. Protocols and guidelines from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Health and Safety Executive of the United Kingdom have been developed to assist in this task. Many of the methods produced by these agencies are readily available on the agency websites on the Internet.
