► Phytoremediation can result in contaminant volatilization and atmospheric transport. ► Phytovolatilization may be acceptable provided the chemicals released are non-toxic. ► SPME techniques have shown promise in air sampling depending on fiber selection. ► SPME can characterize the organoarsinical emissions from rabbitfoot grass. ► Arsine, MMA, DMA, and TMA were never detected during phytovolatilization.
