Abstract
► The introduction of new definitions in nanotechnology impacts also conventional membrane technology. ► Risk estimations must be reflected in the definitions underlying new nanotechnology legislation. ► Nanofiltration should not be considered nanotechnology due to the absence of nanosized pores in most membranes. ► Ultrafiltration should not be treated as nanotechnology for regulatory purposes because it does not present a nano-specific risk.
