Abstract
The results show that an adequate treatment of chemical equilibrium between interlayers and bulk solutions are essential when modeling compacted bentonite, and that activity corrections generally are required for relevant ion equilibrium calculations. It is demonstrated that neglecting these aspects may lead to incorrect inferences regarding bentonite structure, and to incorrect interpretation of diffusion data.
