Distribution and mass balance of hexavalent and trivalent chromium in a subsurface, horizontal flow (SF-h) constructed wetland operating as post-treatment of textile wastewater for water reuse

► SF-h CWs are a technology suitable for Cr(VI) and Cr(III) removal. ► SF-h CWs are able to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III). ► Only Cr(III) is present in the water suspended material inside the reed bed. ► Shoot Cr concentration should not represent a risk of metal intake for foragers. ► Wind diffusion of pollen should not represent an inhalatory risk of Cr for humans.
