Abstract
► Peripheral nerve injury induces transient and permanent changes in the spinal dorsal horn. ► Among these changes, the occurrence of spinal neuronal death is still debated. ► Recent evidence suggests that mechanisms leading to dysfunctional neurons (e.g. impaired autophagy) may contribute to abnormal pain processing.
