Abstract
⺠MMP-1 is produced by type II penumocytes and may be associated with lung complication via hydrolysis of fibrillar collagen. ⺠Lowe MMP-2 activity levels may cause excessive ECM deposition and disturb gas exchange in alveolar space. ⺠A significant increase was found in the serum level of MMP-1 in the exposed group with moderate to severe pulmonary complications. ⺠A significant decrease of MMP-2 activity was observed in exposed groups with mild pulmonary symptoms. ⺠These changes may be participate to the alteration of proteolysis/anti-proteolysis balance and lead to SM induced lung problems.
