Abstract
► We examined the role of glutathione and oxidative stress in methylmercury toxicity. ► A temporal burst of reactive oxygen species was cytoprotective. ► Methylmercury depleted glutathione likely via conjugation. ► The conjugate is exported by MRP-1 and sensitive to blockade by MK-571. ► Export of the conjugate is required for glutathione mediated protection.
