Abstract
► The plasma membrane calcium ATPase (PMCA) Atp2b1a acts in biomineralization of bones and teeth. ► The transgenic Atp2b1a embryo expresses GFP in the pharyngeal epithelium. A subset of these cells represents the ameloblasts. ► The functional role of Atp2b1a was shown in pharyngeal teeth development and calcification by in vivo experiments. ► Atp2b1a may similarly regulate calcification of other bone-forming regions. ► During development of pharyngeal epithelium atp2b1a is regulated by the homeodomain transcription factor Dlx2b.
