Abstract
► Pre-pubertal female rats had suppressed hypothalamus or 30% energy restriction. ► Bone strength, architecture and bone marrow cells compared. ► Bone strength and architecture compromised from hypothalamic suppression. ► Energy restriction resulted in smaller animals with mechanically competent bones. ► Opposite IGF-1 levels in the models and increased osteocalcin levels in both models.
