Abstract
⺠This study assessed medical costs associated with second fracture(s) for patients â¥50 years with an initial closed fracture. ⺠About 4.0-9.2% of patients develop a second fracture within 1 year. ⺠One-year incremental costs due to second fracture were estimated as $18,645-$47,351. ⺠The projected US annual healthcare cost associated with second fracture was $1.96 (95% CI: $1.85-$2.08) billion. ⺠Preventing second fractures through appropriate interventions among patients with a first fracture could have a potential beneficial economic impact.
