Abstract
⺠We review pattern formation by the Gurken gradient in Drosophila oogenesis. ⺠A biophysical model can be used to estimate the spatial range of the gradient. ⺠Dozens of gene expression patterns established by Gurken can be constructed combinatorially, from a small number of building blocks.
