► We study behavioral responses to repeated stressors in fish using selection lines. ► Behavioral reaction patterns of fish to the challenges are repeatable. ► Novelty induces a divergent behavioral response in the selection lines. ► Behavioral flexibility appears to be a feature that is context-dependent in fish.
