► Testosterone has anxiolytic-like effects on behavior. ► Successive negative contrast induces anxiety after incentive downshift. ► Pretraining testosterone facilitates recovery from incentive downshift. ► Pretraining testosterone does not affect anticipatory contrast, not thought to involve anxiety, but based on the same incentives.
