► Anole lizards display a colorful throat fan to court females and defend territories. ► Male lizards that display often have larger display structures than other males. ► Female lizards that display often do not have larger structures than other females. ► Males with high testosterone do not perform displays more often than other males. ► Male display structures are larger than females', even when accounting for body size.
