► Corticotropin releasing factor reinstated cocaine seeking in male and female rats. ► Reinstatement responding varied greatly and revealed a "high responder" population. ► Female rats demonstrated greater variability in response to CRF than males. ► High responder females displayed significantly higher reinstatement than males. ► Individual and gender differences are important factors in cocaine addiction.
