► Men had higher accuracy than women in virtual learning and perspective taking tasks. ► Acute stress was associated with slower response times in the two spatial tasks. ► Acute stress led to changes in heart rate and blood pressure (SAM activation). ► Acute stress did not result in changes in salivary cortisol (HPA activation).
