Abstract
⺠Can higher-order cognitive processes occur non-consciously? ⺠We studied how the brain monitors performance in subliminal and conscious condition. ⺠Behavior and neuroimaging data reveal two distinct error monitoring systems. ⺠The all-or-none error detection system occurs only consciously. ⺠The continuous assessment of confidence is preserved under non-conscious conditions.
