► Interactions between other-pain and self-pain were assessed in two ERP studies. ► Other-pain primes facilitated behavior and ERP responses to self-pain targets. ► Self-pain primes facilitated behavior and ERP responses to other-pain targets. ► Results support shared-representation view more than threat value of pain hypothesis.
