Abstract
► Numerous effects of halogenated anesthetics detected in the intact brain by 1H MRS ► Isoflurane regioselectively caused major rapidly reversible rise in brain lactate. ► Brain lactate correlated with concentration and potency of the halogenated agents. ► Most of isoflurane effects were attenuated by antiadrenergic drugs. ► Metabolic alterations by isoflurane need consideration in functional neuroimaging.
