► Auditory categorical perception was investigated with well-controlled vocalizations. ► MEG responses were measured to categorically congruent and incongruent sounds. ► At ~ 250 ms, responses in the right hemisphere were stronger for incongruent sounds. ► Templates for vocalizations reflected at ~ 250 ms in the right temporoparietal areas.
