Abstract
•Specific-ion effects in water and non-aqueous solvents are critically compared.•Specific-ion effects are manifest in all solvents, although their ordering varies.•The Hofmeister series and lyotropic series are evident in all solvents investigated.•The observed series can change or even reverse by changing solvent.
