Abstract
⺠Historically, epidemiology has thrived in the absence of proximate causes. ⺠The examples of cholera, pellagra, and Kaposi's sarcoma are reviewed. ⺠For complex causes, epidemiology may be uniquely equipped to play a central role in coordinating and interpreting mutidisciplinary evidence and huge amounts of data.
