Abstract
⺠I ask how Hill's criteria aid in establishing a causal hypothesis in an observational study. ⺠The key epistemological requirement is the ability to eliminate alternative hypotheses. ⺠None of Hill's criteria can exclude the common cause hypothesis in a systematic way. ⺠This explains how observational studies are typically weaker than experimental studies.
