Abstract
- Acanthamoeba, Balamuthia and Naegleria spp., cause amoebic meningoencephalitis by accessing the brain.
- The brain injury in above state is thought to be due to amoebal cytotoxic proteases and enzymes.
- We show that the brain damage is substantially due to an 'inside job' done by an amplified host immune response.
