Abstract
- Phlebotomus orientalis is the vector of VL in Sudan and North Ethiopia.
- The distribution of P. orientalis is lined to deeply cracked vertisols.
- We found that P. orientalis sand flies breed in the soil emerging from cracks.
- P. orientalis breed in vertisols in agricultural fields and natural woodland.
