Malaria outside the Amazon region: Natural Plasmodium infection in anophelines collected near an indigenous village in the Vale do Rio Branco, Itanhaém, SP, Brazil

► Mosquitoes near Guarani indigenous village, revealed the presence of plasmodium sp. ► An. cruzii was the predominant species and found infected by P. malariae. ► The intermediate species were An. pseudomaculipes/maculipes and An. fluminensis. ► An. pseudomaculipes/maculipes were found infected by P. vivax and P. malariae. ► The minimum natural infection rate for An. cruzii as determined by PCR was 0.24%.
