► Moroccan and Algerian Anopheles labranchiae share identical DNA barcodes. ► The Atlas Mountains are not a boundary to gene flow in Anopheles labranchiae. ► Synonymy of Anopheles sicaulti of Morocco with Anopheles labranchiae is confirmed. ► Mitochondrial DNA sequence for this species is reported for the first time.
