► A novel device, FTA cartridge, can store cervical samples dry at room temperature. ► This new device holds great potential for large-scale cervical cancer screening. ► There is a 91% agreement between the clinician and self-collected specimens. ► There is no difference in the distribution of HPV between the SC and CC specimens.
