Development of a combined canine distemper virus specific RT-PCR protocol for the differentiation of infected and vaccinated animals (DIVA) and genetic characterization of the hemagglutinin gene of seven Chinese strains demonstrated in dogs

► The method established in the study can be used to detect and differentiate between local CDV field isolates and vaccines effectively and successfully. ► Based on the molecular sequence investigation of wild-type local CDV strain, this study suggests a potential link at the phylogenetic relationship between strains and their geographical source. ► The method is rapid and affordable, and can be used for clinical detection and epidemiological surveillance.
