Abstract
⺠The HIV-1 nucleocapsid (NC) protein contains highly conserved aromatic amino acids. ⺠Mutating one or both aromatics in NC to Ala progressively reduces virus replication. ⺠NC DNA interaction kinetics are also reduced in Ala-mutant NC proteins. ⺠Helix destabilization by Ala-mutant NC proteins are similarly affected.
