Abstract

This work involved dynamic mechanical analysis and study of the tribological properties of natural rubber (NR) filled with fly ash silica (FASi) and precipitated silica (PSi). Weight fractions of FASi:PSi used were 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100. The friction and wear of the rubbers were determined using a ball-on-disc tribometer. Mechanical properties of the FASi/PSi-filled NR compounds were improved with increasing PSi fraction, resulting in a decrease in tan δmax. A 75% PSi fraction was recommended for optimal mechanical properties and wear resistances of FASi/PSi-filled NR vulcanizates. However, the coefficient of friction increased with increasing PSi fraction.

► Dynamic mechanical analysis and tribological properties of rubber composites. ► Natural rubber composites with fly ash silica and precipitated silica hybrid filler. ► There was reinforcement in composites with increasing precipitated silica content. ► 75% precipitated silica fraction was suggested for mechanical and wear properties. ► Increasing precipitated silica fraction tended to increase coefficient of friction.
