Abstract
⺠Strong influence of tool steel microstructure on initial material transfer. ⺠Polishing introduces a nano-scale surface topography. ⺠Distribution, size and composition of hard phase particles control the topography. ⺠Initial material transfer is located to hard phase particles present in the surface. ⺠Material transfer has a strong impact on the friction coefficient.
