Abstract
► Single abrasive particle interactions are simulated by indentation or scratch tests. ► Degree of superimposition (DS) is a new parameter aimed to identify wear transitions. ► Mass loss occurs when DS is above a critical level for scratch and indentation tests. ► Work hardening and reduction of mechanical support occurred for high values of DS. ► Transitions from ploughing to chip formation occurred when scratching DS increased.
