Abstract
ⶠRoughness plays a crucial role to explain the roughness noise. ⶠShocks between antagonist asperities are responsible of the transfer between the kinetic energy of solids and the vibratory energy which produces the radiated sound. ⶠThe fundamental mechanism of roughness noise is the presence of shocks occurring between antagonist asperities of sliding surfaces. ⶠThe vibratory level is a linear increasing function of the logarithm of the surface roughness and the sliding speed.
