Abstract
▶ Roughness plays a crucial role to explain the roughness noise. ▶ Shocks between antagonist asperities are responsible of the transfer between the kinetic energy of solids and the vibratory energy which produces the radiated sound. ▶ The fundamental mechanism of roughness noise is the presence of shocks occurring between antagonist asperities of sliding surfaces. ▶ The vibratory level is a linear increasing function of the logarithm of the surface roughness and the sliding speed.
