Abstract
A methodology for modeling the spall progression life for rolling contact is presented. Spall progression phenomena by crack formation and abrasive wear were considered in order to develop a spall progression life model. The crack resistance index was defined based on the modified Ioannides and Harris method, and the wear resistance index was defined based on the characteristics of the abrasive wear process. A spall progression life model has been developed by using the aforementioned indexes. This model has been verified by spall progression tests of finish hard machined specimens, and been combined with the crack initiation life model and the crack propagation life model to put forward a total life model. The developed total life model has been shown capable of yielding good predictions.
