Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide and its prognosis depends largely on early detection and management. The diagnosis of HCC can be challenging, especially when dealing with scant biopsy specimens and unusual morphology. This review describes HCC subtypes with emphasis on their distinguishing histological features. Furthermore, it incorporates recently described immunohistochemical markers into an algorism for the initial approach of challenging HCC cases.
