Synthesis of low-cost hydrophilic ceramic-polymeric composite membrane for treatment of oily wastewater

► Low cost ceramic support was prepared from natural clay and coated with cellulose acetate. ► Novel theoretical method for determination of the porosity and pore size of the polymeric layer. ► Based on raw material prices, the membrane cost was estimated to be 33.42 $/m2. ► Low concentration of crude oil was removed (50, 100, 200 mg L− 1). ► Up to 93% rejection was achieved for 200 mg L− 1 oil concentration.
