Abstract
⺠We examined homophone density effects in Chinese spoken monosyllable word recognition. ⺠Larger homophone density slows down auditory lexical decision. ⺠The inhibitory effect was not due to competition among multiple spellings. ⺠The effect was due to competition among multiple semantic activations.
