Abstract
Schematic representation of the main events affecting the expression of the cytosolic (PGKB) and glycosomal (PGKC) isoforms of phosphoglycerate kinase in Leishmania major. The PGKB and PGKC genes are positioned side by side in the PGK locus. Based on the polycistronic transcription of trypanosomatids, primary (unprocessed) transcripts are produced at similar rates. Here, we demonstrate that the decay rates of the PGKB and PGKC transcripts and protein isoforms differ. In conclusion, PGKB and PGKC protein levels are maintained as a result of multiple levels of gene expression control.123
